New Delhi, Aug 1: India’s tourism sector is entering a new phase of growth, supported by stronger destination infrastructure, improved connectivity, and a growing focus on creating world-class travel experiences. With its rich heritage, diverse landscapes, and vibrant cultural traditions, India is steadily strengthening its position as a leading global tourism destination.

The government highlighted the sector’s progress, noting that 75 out of 76 projects under the Swadesh Darshan programme have been completed. These projects, developed with an investment of more than ₹5,295 crore, have enhanced tourism infrastructure across key themes, including spiritual, coastal, eco, heritage, rural, Himalayan, Buddhist, and North East circuits.

India’s tourism growth is being powered by rising domestic travel, increasing international interest, and continued investment in visitor facilities. The country recorded 2.9 billion domestic tourist visits in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, while international tourist arrivals reached 2.02 crore in 2025. The sector contributed ₹15.73 lakh crore to India’s GDP in FY2023-24 and supported nearly 84.6 million jobs, highlighting its growing role in the economy.

The focus is now shifting from developing individual attractions to building complete tourism destinations that offer better infrastructure, smoother travel experiences, and greater benefits for local communities. Under Swadesh Darshan 2.0, the government is promoting sustainable and experience-based tourism, with 53 projects worth ₹2,207 crore approved to improve destination planning and visitor amenities.

Pilgrimage and heritage tourism are also receiving a major boost through the PRASHAD scheme, which has sanctioned 54 projects worth over ₹1,726 crore to improve facilities at important spiritual and cultural destinations while preserving their historical significance.

Better connectivity is playing a crucial role in expanding tourism opportunities. Improved highways, modern railway networks, Vande Bharat services, airport development, regional air connectivity, and enhanced last-mile transport are making travel easier and opening up new destinations for visitors.

The upcoming Viksit UDAN initiative, with an investment of over ₹28,840 crore, is expected to further strengthen regional air connectivity by developing new aerodromes and helipads, particularly in smaller cities and remote regions.

Beyond infrastructure, India’s tourism appeal continues to grow through its unique mix of heritage, spirituality, wellness, cuisine, nature, adventure, and local experiences. From ancient monuments and pilgrimage centres to wildlife reserves, beaches, and wellness destinations, the country offers a wide range of experiences for travellers.

With continued investment, digital innovation, and a focus on sustainable development, India’s tourism sector is poised to become a stronger contributor to economic growth, job creation, and global cultural exchange.
