CBSE Revise the Exam Pattern for 11th And 12th Students: Focuses on Competency-Based Question


New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently announced a significant revamp in the assessment and evaluation framework for students in the 11th and 12th grades, aligning closely with the guiding principles of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Starting from the academic year 2024-25, these revisions mark a substantial departure from conventional examination formats, indicating a profound shift in educational paradigms. This initiative underscores CBSE’s dedication to harmonizing educational methodologies with the visionary objectives outlined in the NEP 2020, aiming to foster holistic development and innovative learning approaches among students.

The motive behind revamping the exam pattern is to enhance problem-solving skills and encourage applying knowledge to real-world scenarios, thereby fostering creativity and critical thinking abilities. This shift aims to steer away from the stereotype of rote memorization inherent in traditional exam formats, where students are required to memorize textbook content for regurgitation. Instead, in this revised exam pattern, students will be prompted to apply their knowledge to real-world problems. This change is intended to cultivate a more comprehensive learning experience for students, equipping them with the necessary skills for further academic pursuits.

According to the updated exam structure, there will be a significant boost of 40 to 50% in competency-based questions, encompassing multiple-choice questions (MCQs), case-based inquiries, and source-integrated assessments. In contrast, the distribution of short and long-form questions will diminish, comprising 40 to 30% of the assessment. Despite these adjustments, the proportion of select-response type questions will hold steady, maintaining its weightage at 20%. This underscores the enduring importance of MCQs, which will continue to play a pivotal role in the evaluation process.
