Hyderabad, 15th July, 2024: International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIITH) conducted its 23rd convocation and graduated 600 students and a record number of 32 PhDs and 224 Master’s with thesis.
Over 38% of today’s graduates – 229 out of 600 – earned their degree based on a high-quality thesis. Graduates of IIITH’s Dual-Degree, Master of Science and Ph.D programmes continue to make their mark in top universities and product groups globally.
Yarramaneni Jaishnav, B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)) was awarded the IIITH gold medal in recognition of his outstanding academic performance. Thatipamula Harshvardhan, B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) was awarded Best All-rounder for his notable contributions in academics, extra-curricular activities and IIITH services.
A total number of 136 companies registered for placements; 102 companies conducted interviews.
Commending the graduating students, Prof. P J Narayanan, Director, IIITH said, “The graduating students of 2024 are joining the professional world formally today, out to chart their own paths in this increasingly competitive and complicated world. I am confident you possess highly useful skills in your area and immense creativity to apply those to different problems. Above all, I urge you to travel your life’s journey with deep concern and caring toward the society around you. We expect the best from you in the coming years and are confident you will exceed our expectations”.
Convocation speaker and Chief Guest Dr (Mrs) N Kalaiselvi, Director General, CSIR & Secretary, DSIR congratulated the graduating students and wished them well for their future endeavours. I am impressed by the educational culture of IIIT Hyderabad, she said. She told passing students to create proud moments for the country. The country has a lot of expectations from you. It is fine if you go abroad, study and work. You may go, study, learn, stay, work but come back and pay back to the nation, she told them
In today’s world, everything is information and everything is data. How do you manage? How do you make value addition, she asked the young friends. The IT-trained experts must handle information and data for the nation’s progress.
IIIT Hyderabad model is a unique model. It is neither the US model nor the model of any other developed nation. It is your unique model. It is an Indian Model. The institution is neither funded by any governments nor industrial bodies.
Prof Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Chairman, Governing Council of IIIT Hyderabad admitted students to their degrees and congratulated the graduating students. Healing and cooling contribute to 50% of greenhouse gases. 90% of cooling is done by using fossil fuels. A significant amount of the energy produced is wasted in some form or the other. These are the tasks ahead of you. Can you contribute to efficient energy, which may be three times more efficient than what it is? Save earth, he told the outgoing students.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR
The graduating batch consists of 600 students (B.Tech – 125; B.Tech Honours – 74; Dual Degree – 116; Master of Science by Research – 81; M.Tech – 156; Ph.D. – 32 and MSIT – 16).
Five new regular faculty members joined IIITH in the past year, and five existing faculty were promoted. Several subject matter experts from the industry are engaged with teaching and research at the institute. We have 19 of them today.
The team of faculty, research students, research staff, and undergraduate students produced about 812 papers in the top journals and conferences in the academic year 2023-24. In all, 31 of our Ph.D. students have external competitive fellowships from Google, TCS, IHub Data, Govt, IIT Palakad, etc. and several more students qualified for CSIR and UGC grants.
IIITH’s executive education programs are being delivered in a hybrid model and have produced over 4,000 professionals in about 6 years. Currently, the 22nd batch of the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI&ML) program and Blockchain, and Distributed Ledger Technologies (currently 10th batch) in collaboration with Talent Sprint are in place. This joint initiative was rated as one of the best in the country, being recommended by NASSCOM. A similar program in Software Engineering for Data Science (currently 7th batch) has also seen much traction in the past year.
The alumni have raised about INR 2.24 crore and provided financial assistance to deserving students on a pay-forward model. A total of 66 students (40 UG + 12 PG+ 14 DD) have been supported of which 39 have repaid the kindness forward. Currently, the fund is supporting 19 students.
