ISRO Unveils Sequel to Chandrayaan, India’s Next Lunar Exploration Chapter

11th April 2024 – The Indian Space Research Organization familiarly known as ISRO, made a significant announcement during a recent press conference. India is poised to embark on the next chapter of its Moon exploration journey with the sequel to Chandrayaan. This eagerly awaited mission will continue the nation’s endeavours in exploring the mysteries of the moon. The announcement reflects India’s commitment to advancing its space exploration capabilities and furthering scientific knowledge about our celestial neighbours. With Chandrayaan’s sequel, India reaffirms its position as a prominent player in the global space community, poised to make remarkable strides in lunar exploration.

During the press conference, S. Somanath, the chief of ISRO, revealed significant plans for Chandrayaan-4, positioning it as the initial phase toward achieving the milestone of landing an Indian astronaut on the Moon’s surface by 2040. He added, “Chandrayaan-4 is a concept that we are now developing as a continuation of the Chandrayaan series. our honourable Prime Minister has announced that an Indian will land on the moon in 2040. So, if that has to happen, we have to have continuous moon exploration of various kinds.” This declaration highlights ISRO’s strategic vision and determination to realize ambitious goals in space exploration, positioning India as a significant player in the global space arena.

Chandrayaan-4 represents the inaugural stride on India’s path to achieving the historic feat of landing an Indian astronaut on the lunar surface and facilitating the retrieval of moon samples back to Indian soil. This ambitious mission encompasses the entire cycle of lunar exploration, from touchdown to sample collection and return. The success of Chandrayaan-4 hinges upon the completion of this comprehensive cycle. By achieving this milestone, India will assert its prowess in space exploration and pave the way for groundbreaking scientific discoveries.

S. Somanath further elaborated that ISRO is actively engaged in various projects, spanning from satellite development to advancements in rocket technology. A significant milestone was achieved by ISRO, namely the success of Chandrayaan-3, which landed its lander on the challenging site of the moon’s south pole on August 23. This historic achievement solidified India’s position as the first country to accomplish such a feat. Additionally, in January, ISRO launched its inaugural solar mission, Aditya L1, sending the spacecraft into the Halo orbit.

Another notable project on ISRO’s agenda is Gaganyaan, which aims to send three astronauts into space, orbiting at an altitude of 400 km for three days. Following the mission’s completion, the spacecraft will safely return the astronauts to Indian soil, executing a landing on water. This ambitious endeavour marks a significant leap forward for India’s space program, as it endeavours to achieve new milestones in human spaceflight.
