The Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra claimed the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event at the Federation Cup held at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar. Despite a slow start, Neeraj’s spear shimmered through the Wednesday evening sky, leaving spectators with its brilliance.

Local fans had high hopes for Kishore Jena as well, but the 28-year-old couldn’t meet the expectations and settled with the 75.49m which is not up to the mark of a medal. Nevertheless, both Jena and Neeraj have already secured their spots for the upcoming Paris Olympics, promising more thrilling performances on the international stage.

The battle for medals was fierce, with DP Manu clinching the silver from Karnataka with an impressive throw of 82.06m, closely followed by Uttam from Maharastra who claimed bronze with a throw of 78.39m. However, it was Neeraj who stole the show, taking the lead in the fourth round with an outstanding effort of 82.27m. Such was his dominance that he didn’t even need to take his last two throws, as he was at his highest after the competitor’s last throw.

Representing Haryana with pride, Neeraj’s victory adds another feather to his illustrious cap. While his personal best and national record stand at 89.94m, he continues to inch closer to the elusive 90m mark, showcasing his relentless pursuit of excellence.

Chopra’s last domestic tournament was in March 2021, where he won gold with a throw of 87.80m. Despite securing the gold medal, he expressed dissatisfaction, stating that his performance was below his expectations.
