New Delhi, May 8: On the occasion of Mother’s Day, Wishes and Blessings, a Delhi-based registered NGO, has launched a mindful and unique campaign #SupportAbandonedMothers dedicated to celebrating abandoned and forgotten elderly mothers living in old age homes and care centres.
Inspired by the experiences of elderly women residing in the organisation’s old age homes, the initiative aims to draw attention to the emotional challenges faced by elderly women who have been left without family support during the most vulnerable phase of their lives. The initiative is launched at the time of Mother’s Day where most people honour and celebrate their mothers, the campaign seeks to remind people of the many mothers who continue to live in isolation, longing for care, companionship and emotional connection.
As part of the initiative, people are encouraged to spend time with elderly mothers on Mother’s Day and pledge regular visits to help them feel remembered and cared for. Supporters can also contribute by sponsoring meals for a day, month or year, along with medicines, milk, ration, clothes and other daily essentials. Individuals may also send cakes, flowers and special Mother’s Day treats for the residents or choose to support the long-term care of an elderly mother. The initiative aims to foster meaningful human connections for elderly women who are often left feeling isolated and forgotten.
Speaking about the campaign, Founder and President of the organisation, Dr. Geetanjali Chopra, said: “Every mother deserves love, dignity and care. Unfortunately, many elderly mothers are left alone during the most vulnerable phase of their lives. Through this campaign, we hope to remind people that even small acts of compassion can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who often feel forgotten by society.” She further appealed to the public to support the initiative in whatever way possible — through contributions, essential items or simply by offering their time and companionship."
The campaign also seeks to raise awareness about the growing issue of elderly abandonment and the emotional challenges faced by senior citizens living without family support. Wishes and Blessings currently runs two old age homes — one in Delhi and another in Vrindavan — where elderly men and women are provided with shelter, nutritious meals, medical care, emotional support and companionship.
