Celebrating Education: A Global Commitment
Every year on January 24, the world pauses to celebrate the International Day of Education—a day dedicated to the transformative power of learning. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, this observance highlights education as a cornerstone of peace, equality, and sustainable development.
“Education is the most powerful tool we have to create a better, more inclusive world.” — UNESCO
Since the first celebration in 2019, more than 59 countries have joined the global movement to ensure inclusive, equitable, and lifelong learning opportunities for all.
2026 Theme: Youth as Co-Creators of Education
This year, the eighth International Day of Education embraces the theme:
“The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education.”
Young people face persistent barriers—poverty, inequality, and limited access to quality education—that restrict their ability to influence the future. By involving youth in policy-making, curriculum design, and technology-driven learning initiatives, societies can ensure education reflects the aspirations of the next generation.
“Youth are not just learners—they are innovators, problem-solvers, and architects of tomorrow’s education systems.” — UN Release
Why Youth Engagement Matters
- Global Impact: Youth under 30 constitute more than half of the world’s population, making their participation in education critical.
- Future-Ready Learning: Technology and AI are transforming classrooms, careers, and skills. Engaging youth ensures education aligns with these rapid changes.
- Social Progress: Meaningful participation combats inequality, promotes gender parity, and strengthens peaceful societies.
UNESCO’s 2026 Initiatives
To mark the day, UNESCO is hosting major events in Paris:
- Global Education Monitoring Report: Launch of new metrics to assess youth involvement in policy-making.
- SDG4 Youth & Student Network: A new cohort giving young leaders a platform for global action.
- Showcase of Youth-Led Projects: Highlighting innovative initiatives that expand access to quality education worldwide.
History in Focus
The International Day of Education was officially proclaimed by the UNGA on December 3, 2018, celebrating the role of education in peace and development. Globally, this day complements national celebrations like India’s National Education Day on November 11, honoring Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a pioneering advocate for women’s education.
Education as a Catalyst for Change
The 2026 theme emphasizes that co-creating education with youth is more than participation—it’s empowerment. By involving students in shaping policies and learning methods, societies can build inclusive, adaptive, and technology-driven education systems ready for the challenges of the 21st century.
Callout:
“Empowering youth to co-create education today is an investment in tomorrow’s leaders, innovators, and changemakers.”
Looking Ahead
International Day of Education 2026 is a call to action: governments, educators, and communities must collaborate with youth to design education that is relevant, equitable, and forward-looking. Only by harnessing the creativity and energy of young people can we prepare societies for a rapidly evolving world.
“Education shapes not just minds, but the future of societies.”
