New Delhi, Sep 15: Scientific research can lead to important discoveries and solutions, but much of that knowledge remains confined to academic journals because research papers are often written in highly technical language. A new AI-based initiative, SARAL AI, is seeking to change that by helping turn scientific research into short, easy-to-understand videos.
Developed under the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), SARAL AI is aimed at making research more accessible to people who may not have specialised scientific knowledge. The initiative is particularly relevant for students, educators and the general public, who can find it difficult to understand lengthy and technical research papers.
The CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) has started exploring and adopting the technology as part of its efforts to strengthen science communication through digital platforms.
The basic idea behind SARAL AI is to take research that has already been published and present its key findings in a visual format. Short videos can explain the central idea of a study, its findings and its relevance in a way that is easier for a wider audience to understand and share.
This can help address one of the longstanding challenges in science communication. Researchers may spend years working on a study, but the findings may reach only a limited academic audience after publication. By creating more accessible formats, institutions can potentially take that research to classrooms, online audiences and communities beyond the scientific sector.
For students, such videos could provide a simpler introduction to complex subjects and help them understand how scientific research is connected to real-world issues. Teachers and educators could also use such content as an additional learning resource, while the general public could gain a better understanding of developments in areas such as health, technology, environment, agriculture and other scientific fields.

ANRF CEO Dr Shivkumar Kalyanaraman recently encouraged CSIR-NIScPR to explore SARAL AI during his visit to the institute. He stressed the importance of taking research beyond academic publication and making it accessible to a much larger section of society.
The adoption of the technology comes amid a wider push to use emerging technologies to improve the dissemination of scientific knowledge. The objective is not to replace scientific publications but to create an additional communication layer that can help people understand the research behind them.
CSIR-NIScPR, under Director Dr Geetha Vani Rayasam, has been exploring new-age technologies and digital platforms to expand the reach of science communication. As part of this effort, the institute recently organised a hands-on workshop on SARAL AI, which saw participation from more than 90 people, including journal editors and researchers.
The move could become particularly useful as India's research and innovation ecosystem continues to expand. With more research being generated across universities, laboratories and institutions, communicating those findings effectively will be as important as publishing them.
SARAL AI therefore represents a shift towards making scientific knowledge more public-friendly. By presenting research in shorter and more accessible formats, the initiative aims to help ensure that valuable scientific work does not remain limited to journals and laboratories, but reaches the people who can learn from it, apply it and benefit from it.
